Prominent York County Farmer Dies in Gastonia Hospital from Injuries in Wreck.
James M. Miller, prominent farmer of York county, the father of Mrs. T.M. Caldwell of Gaffney, was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon when the automobile he was driving collided with a wagon on a narrow bridge near Bowling Green. Mr. Miller died early Wednesday night in a hospital at Gastonia, N.C., where he was taken in an effort to save his life.
Funeral services held Thursday afternoon at the Bethel Presbyterian church, in York county, were attended by a number of friends of the family from Gaffney as well as many York county people.
The following report of the fatal accident appeared in the Charlotte Observer yesterday morning:
"Gastonia, May 13 - James M. Miller, prominent farmer of ther Bethel section of York county, died last night at the city hospital from injuries received when his automobile collided with a wagon load of lumber on Beaverdam bridge, below Bowling Green, S.C.
"Mr. Miller was returning to his home, four miles east of Clover, from Gastonia, accompanied by his brother, Ess Miller, when he lost control of his car when he saw a wagon on the narrow bridge. The car crashed head-on into the wagon, the end of the wagon tongue piercing Mr. Miller's mouth and tearing away part of his face. The wagon was driven by Quinn Petty, mail carrier of Bowling Green, and was loaded with lumber. Ess Miller was uninjured.
"Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, who was a Miss Thomasson, of the Bethany section of York county, S.C., three children, Mesdames Tom Caldwell, of Gaffney, S.C., and Howard Riddle, of Bethel, and Dr. Robert Miller. A brother, J.B. Miller, of York; a sister, Mrs. John Campbell, of Bethel, two half brothers, Ess Miller, of Bethel, and Dr. Ben Miller, of Hickory Grove, also survive. Another daughter, Mrs. Jim Meek Barnett, is dead.
"Mr. Miller was a decon in Bethel Presbyterian church and interment took place there this afternoon at 4 o'clock."
