"Death of an Aged Citizen at his home near Crowder's Creek"
Last Sunday afternoon at one o'clock, Mr. John H. Adams died suddenly at his home near Crowder's Creek in Gaston County. He was sitting in his chair only a moment or two before death came on sudden wing and took his breath of life. He had prayed that he might die suddenly and on the Sabbath day; he did not want to be a tax on his children through a lingering sickness. And it was granted to him according to his prayer. Born Feb. 12, 1811, he was very nearly 82 years of age. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and had been for many years. He leaves a wife, five children, and nineteen grandchildren to mourn their loss. He was the father of our townsman Mr. W.H. Adams. His body was buried at Bethel Monday, the funeral being conducted by Rev. Mr. McAllister. His death was the first in the family in over 38 years. Mr. Adams was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens in Gaston County, and after a long and useful life, he has been gathered unto his fathers. Let us hope that after life's long and fitful fever he sleeps well.
