OBITUARY-Dr. Alexander Meek Barnett...
Funeral services for the late Dr. Alexander Meek Barnett, who passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 29, 1920, from influenza, were held Friday at noon at historic Bethel Church in York County. Dr. Barnett was a popular pharmacist and citizen who was buried in the cemetery at Bethel following services conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.E.Gillispie, DD of the First Presbyterian Church of Yorkville, SC, assisted by the Rev. Dr. J. H. Henderlite of Gastonia, NC.
One of the largest crowds that ever attended a funeral at Bethel Church was in attendance. Practically the whole population of the Bethel section, where Dr. Barnett was born and raised, was in attendance. There were also hundreds of friends from Gastonia and York and a delegation of Masons from Gastonia in attendance.
Although only 35 years of age, Dr. Barnett was one of the best known drug men in South Carolina. It is said that he knew more people in York County, SC and Gaston County, NC by their first name than any other man.
Dr. Barnett was born Nov. 29, 1884 to James William Barnett and Emily Craig Barnett, who survive. Also, surviving, are one sister, Carrie Neel Barnett, and three brothers, Robert Craig Barnett, John Hope Barnett, and William Henry Barnett.
At the grave the services were concluded by the Masonic order and the body was laid to rest with the solemn and impressive rites of this order.
Hundreds of floral tributes, coming from the rich and the poor, the high and the low, from all sections of the two Carolinas covered his grave.
