W.R.J. STANTON DEAD.
Well Known Citizen of Bethel Section Passed Away Last Tuesday.
Yorkville Enquirer, 19th.
Mr. W.R.J. Stanton, one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Bethel township, died at the home of his son, W.W. Stanton, in Bethel at 5:40 o'clock Tuesday afternoon following a long period of suffering with Bright's disease and a general breakdown. He had been in bad health more than a year and for the past eight months had been confined to his room. The funeral was held at Bethel church Wednesday at noon in conjunction with that of Miss Margaret Moore, the double service being conducted by Rev. A.A. McLean and the interment following in the cemetery there. William Rufus Johnson Stanton was in the 72nd year of his age, having been born at the place where he died July 10, 1844. He was the son of Isaac and Martha McGill Stanton. When the War Between the Sections broke out he was too young for service being only in his 17th year. All of his life he had been troubled with deafness and although he offered his services toward his country's cause he was refused because of his physical defect. November 13, 1872, he was married to Ann E. Glenn, daughter of Robert and Pamelia Glenn, of Gaston county, N.C. Of this union the following children survive: W.W. Stanton, Clover, No. 3 and E. Manning Stanton, Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Stanton died April 9, 1912. He was for many years a loyal and consistent member of Bethel Presbyterian church. The funeral Wednesday was attended by many persons from York and Gaston counties.
