TRAGIC DEATH-Matthew Bigger
Matthew Bigger met a very tragic death while harvesting wheat with his helpers on the river bottom of the Catawba River near Huddleston Island, Mecklenburg County, NC on June 30, 1827 at the age of 38 years. About mid-day, he went swimming, took cramps and drowned before his helpers could render assistance. He was a fine physical specimen and was said to have been one of the best swimmers on the river.
Matthew was born Jan. 28, 1789 to James Bigger and Edith Wilson Bigger. He married Erixeny Adams Barnett on March 19, 1812.She had died previously on December 15, 1826. This left their children without parents.
Ann, Alexander,James and Martha were taken by Aunt Betsy Patterson. Andrew, an infant, was taken by his grandmother, Rachel Adams Barnett, with whom he resided until he was sixteen years of age. On account of an unpleasantness with his grandfather, Alexander Barnett, Andrew went to live with Aunt Betsy and Uncle James Patterson.
