OBITUARY:
Mrs. Jane Meek Barnett fell on sleep February 14, 1902, aged 84 years, 5 months and 27 days. She was in exceedingly good health until three weeks ago, the day of her death. She took grip which was too much for her old age. She was concious almost till the last. Hers had been a long and useful life. She was strong in body, mind and Christian character. She reared a large family, teaching then the fear of the Lord. The Book was her daily guide and she began each day by consulting its pages. The needy, the representative of her Master, found in her an answer to their prayers. When she had served her generation by the will of God, she sweetly fell on sleep. A noble testimony she leaves behind, a blessed heritage to those that weep.
The dear Lord's best interpreters
Are humble human souls.
The gospel of a life like hers
Is more than books or scrolls.
The funeral exercises were conducted at 3:00 o'clock by Rev. M.McG.Shields at the home. The remains were carried to Bethel the next day and interred at the old Bethel Cemetery about 1:00 o'clock.
The deceased was born near Bowling Green and was the daughter of the late William and Rebecca Hope Adams. She has a large list of relatives in Gastonia and all through the Bethel section. She spent part of her early years in what is now Cherokee County on the Broad River, went to school in Yorkville and afterwards made her home in Bethel, until October, 1899, when she moved to Gastonia. Her husband, Alexander Hamilton Barnett, died December 29, 1893. Her mother died when she was a child. She had eleven children, thirteen grand-children and one great-grand-child. She prized a photograph in which were the pictures of four generations. Her living children are Mrs. R.E.Nichols of York County, J.W. Barnett of the old home place, Miss E.J. Barnett, who lived with her mother, A.M.Barnett and R.M. Barnett of Bethel and Miss Maggie Barnett, who loved with her mother. The devotion of these two daughters to their aged mother was most tender. Mrs. Barnett was a most lovely character and a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church. She belonged for many years at Bethel and moved her membership to Gastonia when she moved their two years ago. She was a devoted mother and faithful friend and those who knew her best, loved her most. One of her sons, John Nelson Barnett, died about the close of the war as a result of the amputation of a leg.
