OBITUARY.....
George Lafayette Riddle, 72, died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on August 5, 1907 as a result of an attack of apoplexy. Mr. Riddle was born June 14, 1835 in Bethel Township to the late Benjamin Pettus Riddle and Mary Margaret Duff Riddle. He was born on the farm on which he died and after the death of his father, which occurred when young Riddle was about 12 years of age, he operated a mill located on Crowders Creek on the plantation that came down to him through his father and grandfather. From his youth he was identified with "Riddle's Mill", an establishment that had been an indispensable necessity to the surrounding country for more than a hundred years, and the keeping of this mill abreast with the growing demands of a developing country continued one of his principal cares up to the time of his death.
Mr. Riddle was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, SC where he served as an Elder. He was a member of the Clover Blue Lodge and the Yorkville Royal Arch Chapter. Mr. Riddle had been President of the Clover Cotton Manufacturing Company for a number of years at the time of his death.
Funeral service was held at Bethel Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William B. Arrowood officiating. Interment was in Bethel Church Cemetery under the supervision of the Masonic Lodges of Clover and Yorkville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Glenn Riddle, and a daughter, Eliza Glenn. He was survived by a son, R. B. Riddle, six grandchildren and a number of close relatives.
