OBITUARY:
Joseph Clinton, 92, died April 25, 1869, at his residence in York County, South Carolina. He was born March 10, 1778.
He was born during the American Revolution, in the immediate neighorhood where he died, this aged patriarch, venerable for the days of the years of his pilgrimage on earth; beloved for the kind disposition of heart ever manifested to his acquaintances; respected for the sterling qualities of a sound understanding; sober, unambitious, prudent; attentive to his own worldly affairs, though without inordinate desires for wealth; not meddlesome with the concerns of neighbors, though far from inattentive to the best interests of his country; this good man and estimable citizen, full of years, and of the respect of those who knew him longest, has gone down to his resting place on earth with a mind conscious of earthly dissolution, with his reason unclouded in his last monents of existence here, and doubtless with a blessed hope of a glorious ressurection hereafter.
The deceased connected himself with the Presbyterian Church, at Bethel, in at least early manhood, lived through several generations a life consistant with his profession, and inherited, even here, the promise: "With long life will I satisfy Him; because He hath set His love upon me--because He hath known my name."
Mr. Clinton was born to Capt. Peter and Frances Clinton and was married to Mary Barnett in 1804.
The subject of this notice leaves among us several children; a majority suggestive of serious reflection to these, properly exercised by the providence of a covenant keeping God.
